Chris Kelly, Half of Teenage Rap Duo Kris Kross, Dies from Apparent Drug Overdose

One Half of 90s Rap Duo Passed Away from Drug Overdose

On Wednesday, May 1st, rapper Chris Kelly died in a hospital in Atlanta, GA, from an apparent drug overdose. He was famous as half of the young rap duo Kris Kross, which rose to fame in the 1990’s. Chris Kelly was 34.

Captain Kay Lester, spokeswoman for the Fulton County police, reported that “It appears it may have been a possible drug overdose.” Kelly was hospitalized after an apparent drug overdose in his home. “We are investigating it as a drug overdose unless the toxicologist report says otherwise,” she said.

While in Kris Kross, Kelly went by the stage name Mac Daddy. His partner, Chris Smith, went by Daddy Mac. Their trademark was wearing identical outfits backwards, and their first hit song which rocketed them to stardom was “Jump,” released in 1992. The huge success from their first song led them to tour with Michael Jackson, guest appearances on TV shows, and their own video game. However, the duo ended up being a one-hit wonder, and were never able to match the massive popularity of “Jump.”

The duo broke up in 1996 after their  third album, “Young, Rich, & Dangerous.”

Jermaine Dupri was the group’s producer. He posted a letter to fans about Kelly’s death on So So Def’s website:

“To the world chris was MacDaddy but to me, he was a son I never had, as much as you may think I taught him, he taught me, god has blessed me to be in the presence of so many naturally talented people, and chris was one. his understanding of what we set out to do, from day one was always on point. his passion for the music, his love for doing shows, his want to better than everyone else, was always turnt up. when I think about it I spent more time with chris than damn near anybody in my whole life, so you can imagine how bad this hurts.

“I will always love you chris, and I will never let the world forget you, may god bless your soul.”

Kelly’s mother also released a statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”
