Around the same time bath salts, or MDPV as it’s legally known, so did K-2 “spice potpourri”, also known as synthetic marijuana. Both substances were subject to the ban issued by the State of South Carolina.
Synthetic marijuana looks like dried grass and is available on the Internet and in convenience stores and smoke shops across the country, even after the ban. The drug sales for about $20 a gram and is used as a substitute for real marijuana. The drugs are lucrative because they do not show up on drug tests and readily available despite being banned.
How is synthetic marijuana still readily available?
In regards to synthetic marijuana, the federal government banned synthetic cannibinoids. Cannibinoids are the main chemical compound found in synthetic marijuana. However, with advancement of society comes the advancement in chemistry. People are now altering the molecular structure, thus creating analogues of the substances. Analogues are substances of similar structure to those that are banned. YouTube videos are even readily available to show how to make the drug.
One South Carolina family hopes to use their story to show firsthand the dangers of synthetic marijuana.
Like any father, Stanley Presnell is concerned about his son, Nicholas’ wellbeing. One night Mr. Presnell came home to find a strange smell coming from his son’s bedroom. As Mr. Presnell found out, that strange smell was due to the “potpourri”, or synthetic marijuana, his son was smoking. Nicholas admitted receiving the synthetic marijuana from an adult friend who bought it at Seven Sense on Two Notch Rd.
Mr. Presnell, like many, thought the drug had been banned. Mr. Presnell went to the smoke shop to figure out how his son was able to get a hold of this synthetic marijuana.
According to WIS, shop owner Jack Walton stated that they do not sell anything that is banned. Walton says he relies on the manufacture to know which chemicals are banned and which are legal, as well as, looking at the bill himself. Walton does warn his customers that herbal incense, like synthetic marijuana, is not meant for human consumption. He does acknowledge that people are consuming these drugs.
Mr. Presnell hopes his story teaches parents to watch out for this new dangerous drug. Mr. Presnell is lucky nothing serious happened to his son resulting from his synthetic marijuana use.
