New Synthetic Drug Killing Teenage Users

New Synthetic Drug, LSD-Like “N-Bomb” Killing Young Users

new synthetic drugA new synthetic drug is responsible for killing some young users.

The synthetic drug is commonly referred to as “N-Bomb,” and causes euphoria and hallucinations. The drug is described as much like LSD, but can be more deadly.  In South Carolina, possession of synthetic drugs may result in SC synthetic drug charges.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reports that the synthetic drug is responsible for the deaths of 19 people between the ages of 15 and 29 in a two year period – March 2012 to present. Two teenagers in Indiana died after taking N-Bomb in March of this year.

The DEA stated that the synthetic drug is readily available online.

“They don’t understand what they’re buying,” said Jeanine Motsay of Greenwood, whose 16-year-old son died after taking the drug. “It’s poison.”

Synthetic drugs are particularly dangerous because they are manufactured, and very slight chemical changes can keep the drugs technically legal, even at a federal level, which makes them readily available to even underage users. Synthetic marijuana has come under fire recently with the DEA because of this problem – “head shops” sold intoxicating substances usually referred to as “incense,” but which were actually a manufactured drug, usually versions of synthetic marijuana called K2 or Spice.

N-Bomb is specifically manufactured to look and act like LSD, and is even sold on blotter paper. Dealers can buy batches from China through the internet, then mix it down with alcohol or other liquid, drip it onto blotter paper, and sell it.

However, the synthetic drug can be incredibly deadly. A normal dose can work the same as an overdose, which is what happened to Motsay’s son.

My son took the same thing that two other boys took and he died,” Motsay said. She added that part of the problem is people go to buy acid, and actually get N-Bomb. “So when people say they’re selling LSD, that’s not what they’re selling,” she said.

In November, the DEA declared N-Bomb a Schedule I substance, which, like LSD, heroin, and other “street drugs,” means dealers can be prosecuted at the federal level, and the substance has no known medical benefit.
