Meth Lab Explosion in Columbia SC Home, Three Possibly Injured

Meth Lab Explosion Injures Three Suspects, Including One Child

meth lab explosionThe Richland County Sheriff’s Department is searching for two suspects and a 3 month old baby after a meth lab exploded inside a mobile home on Tuesday morning in Northeast Richland County.

The meth lab explosion occurred just after 8 AM on Tuesday, June 10th.

Investigators suspect that the two mobile home owners drove a burned man to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital after the meth lab inside their home exploded. So far, police have not determined whether the 3-month-old was injured in the explosion, but they suspect the child is in the vehicle with the two meth lab suspects.

“After the explosion, the people in the home called a friend to come get them,” Spokesman Sgt. Curtis Wilson said. “The two adults dropped the father of the three-month-old off at Palmetto Health Richland.”

“They kept going, and we don’t know if the child was injured,” Wilson continued. “We are looking for a four-door, silver Pontiac.”

Deputies have the child’s father, who was injured in the meth lab explosion and taken to the hospital, in custody.  Meth charges are serious, and depending upon whether you are charged with simple possession, manufacturing or trafficking meth, you may be facing serious jail time.

The Rise of Meth Labs in South Carolina

Law Enforcement in South Carolina is cracking down on the manufacturing of methamphetamines.  Two years ago, South Carolina lawmakers attempted to stop the fast-growing trend by placing limits on the amount of pseudoephedrine customers can purchase, and pharmacists – who keep the drug behind counters – swipe the customer’s driver’s license to see if limits have been met. Electronic tracking should, in theory, stop meth manufacturers from buying large amounts of the necessary chemical.

However, the portable meth labs use less of the drug by creating smaller amounts of methamphetamine.

All meth labs use dangerous, deadly chemicals, and are prone to explosions – even the portable ones. In the shake and bake method, manufacturers must constantly unscrew the lid of the bottle to relieve pressure. When not monitored closely, the bottles can explode, spraying dangerous chemicals everywhere.
